In the current issue of Prevention magazine: a pair of spreads to inspire everyone to seize the day and get out there!   Stephanie Allen was wonderful to hang out with that Halloween morning in Cayucos, just north of Morro Bay, CA.  At age 61 she picked up surfing a dozen years ago – fearful prior and embracing it ever since.   Stephanie started as a photo editor at Rolling Stone in the 80s and then moved on into the film marketing and advertising business, from Tri-Star to Orion to Fox Searchlight, conceptualizing the campaigns for Sideways, I Heart Huckabees, Garden State, Napoleon Dynamite.. and recently retiring from her Exec VP Creative Advertising role.

A strong offshore wind was blowing that morning as my assistant Anna and I met up with Stephanie and her long-time boyfriend Stacy Peralta (also in the film business and a legendary pro skater – see Dogtown and Z-Boys which he co-wrote and directed).  Stephanie’s black wetsuit and orange board (not planned!) perfectly kicked off the halloween morning… As I said it was a wonderful way to start the day.  We had the beach and waves all to ourselves for as far as we could see. Stacy carved the outside sets on his Stand Up Paddleboard while Stephanie and I had fun on the inside waves.   Humble, warm, and down-to-earth, afterward they brewed us coffee, tea and made us a great breakfast at their beach bungalow.    And they made sure we couldn’t leave tiny Cayucos without trying the incredible smoked fish tacos at Ruddell’s Smokehouse
